Ignorance and Want: the social conscience of Charles Dickens. Come and explore some of the heroes and villains of Dickens’s philanthropy.  From the extraordinary Angela Burdett-Coutts – the first woman to be given a peerage, to the villainous William Shaw who inspired Mr Squeers in Nicholas Nickleby.  From the murderous Mr and Mrs Manning whose public execution disgusted Dickens to the beneficent Mr Brownlow – in both his real and fictional forms.
